Those of you who know me well know that now and then I decide:
I MUST EAT HEALTHIER!
Often that statement comes with lofty goals: eating raw, eating only veggies, eating only organic veggies, eating vegetarian or even vegan (but I didn’t know what shoes to wear most of mine are leather and then I felt bad for the cows)
Sometime in the middle of last week I once again announced to my wonderful husband : I MUST EAT HEALTHIER (this came after two weeks of eating pounds and pounds of M&Ms)
This time I added this statement: AND I AM NOT QUITTING EITHER
followed by this caveat: I am the only one of in my family to get cancer — who is to say I didn’t give it to myself (either through poor nutritional habits or environments my Navy travels took me to)
But of course we are in a recession — how will I be able to afford all these tasty veggies, fruits and grains?
Then I decided I would only buy what was on sale and/or in season — prices would be a bit cheaper.
I also checked out a newish market in the area : New Flower Farmers Market ; which is also known as Sun Flower Farmer Market in other states. I checked out the week’s sale flyer online and made my fruit and veggies list off of it.
Here is what I ended up with from New Flower:
red potatoes @ 1.00 lb (bought 2 lbs)
Roma tomatoes @ .88 lb (only bought .87 cents worth)
7 grain granola @ 1.99 lb (bought .95 lbs)
iceberg lettuce @ .88 a head
sliced mushrooms @ 1.69 a container (same size container unsliced same size/same price looked like less mushrooms)
red seedless grapes @ .97 lb (bought 2.19 lbs)
tangelos @ .88 lb (bought 2.25 lbs)
lemon @ .34 (was 3 for 1.00 but only needed one)
braeburn apples @ .67 lbs (bought 2.43 lbs)
baby carrots @ 1.50 bag (one bag)
garlic @ .50 (bought one)
Total price: $ 18.29 from New Flower
Total price: $2.90 from Walmart (for bananas, celery and a cucumber)
Total veggie/fruit bill: $21.19
I will know more toward the end of the week if this was enough to keep me fueled.
Also, this weekend I have cooked brown rice, made pita chips and home-made hummus (minus the tahini – couldn’t locate at Walmart)
So the goal is:
GOAL IS:
Eat far far far more veggies/fruits/whole grains; eat meat sparingly if at all (this works better with the holidays behind us.)
I am still eating a bit of cheese (swiss), greek style yogurt (cause I love it), egg whites (scrambled on Saturdays) and 2 tablespoons of chocolate milk (a day and in my coffee)
So you really cannot call me a “raw food” person, or a “vegetarian” person
but hopefully soon you can call me “healthier”
